Dear Sumner Danbury Families,

Welcome to another exciting week at Sumner Danbury, where learning and laughter fill our campus!

Last week’s McTeacher’s Night fundraiser at McDonald's was a tremendous success, thanks to the amazing efforts of our PFA and the support of our school community! McDonald’s generously donated 20% of the evening’s proceeds, allowing us to raise an impressive $1,791.34. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who volunteered and joined us for this fun-filled event. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces coming together in support of our school!

Starting Tuesday, October 1, we begin our Fall Conferences—an important opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress and set goals for the year. To accommodate these meetings, students will have early dismissal from Tuesday, October 1, through Tuesday, October 8. Kindergarten through 6th grade will be dismissed at 1:00 PM each day. Please be sure to make any necessary child care arrangements.

Student Learning Highlights

Music teacher Ms. Moultrie leads Ms. Mueller's preschool class in a collaborative activity where students use hand motions to combine different segments of a song.

Students in Ms. Gallego's class use a playful pointer to follow along with "My Cool School," a story about the various adults who help students at school, as their teacher reads aloud.

Students in Mr. Rodricks, Ms. Butler, and Ms. McCrary's class team up for an engaging hygiene lesson, learning the importance of handwashing and even making their own soap afterwards!

Writers in Mr. Guzman's class use Thinking Maps to organize their ideas for a personal narrative and then draft in a Google Doc.

Sixth graders in Ms. DeLeon's class write in response to their reading. They are learning to support a claim with clear reasons and relevant evidence from the text.

Mr. LaMascus and his students discuss the craft and structure of a text and the impact of specific word choice on meaning and tone.

Mrs. Moultrie, the music teacher, leads fifth graders in Ms. Park and Ms. Huizar's classes in learning rhythms.

The playground is also open for play during this time (NEW)

School begins every day at 8:00 AM
Teachers pick up their students from their line at 8:00 AM
Students are late and will be marked tardy if they arrive after 8:00 AM

Attendance Counts

Prompt and regular attendance is a key component to your child’s success in school. Students need to attend school to achieve in school. When students are not in school, they fall behind. Chronic absenteeism impacts all students—no matter their age. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate.

When excessive absences (excused and unexcused) or tardies occur, the school district’s automated system notifies parents with a letter expressing concern. The school site makes every effort to work with families to solve attendance problems. However, if poor attendance continues, the matter may be referred to the School Attendance and Review Board of Los Angeles County (SARB).

Parents can help promote good attendance by scheduling home activities, appointments, trips, and family vacations outside of regular school days and times.

When your child is absent

As soon as you know your child will be absent from school, please call the office to speak to the office directly or call the Attendance Hotline. You can call this number any time; it is available 24 hours.

If you do not call, please expect a call from the office that day. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming job, so your help in calling the office is greatly appreciated.

Contracts - Independent Study

If it becomes necessary for your child to be absent from school for multiple days in a row, please let your child’s teacher know at least three days in advance, if possible. Classroom work will be sent with your child and he/she is expected to complete this work during the contract dates. When the work is completed, it must be returned to the school immediately. The funding credit collected from the state is based on the percentage of the work completed by the student.

Supporting Peer Interactions at Home:

Peer interactions, like playing, sharing, and communicating, can be challenging for some children with autism. It's important to provide support by encouraging activities with peers, such as playdates, going to playgrounds, or online interactions. For children who struggle, using reinforcement, prompting, and visual cues can help them feel more comfortable and improve their social engagement. With the right strategies, all children with autism can participate in peer interactions, even if verbal communication is challenging.

Mission

Sumner Danbury Elementary School will provide challenging academic experiences that will encourage each child to reach his/her full academic and social potential. School Site Council Vacancy

At Sumner Danbury we believe that parents and guardians are partners which is why we would like to invite you to join us and become a member of our School Site Council. The School Site Council (SSC) is collective group of teachers, parents, administrators, and interested community members who work together to develop and monitor a school's improvement plan. The SSC is a legally required decision-making body for any school receiving federal funds. If you are interested, please complete the self-nomination form by clicking HERE.
