Family Newsletter

Sumner Danbury Elementary School Staff

Dear Sumner Danbury Families,

Welcome to another exciting week at Sumner Danbury! As we continue to inspire curiosity and ignite a love for learning, we’re eager to share the latest events, accomplishments, and important updates from our school.

This week, we held our first Morning Meeting assembly, it was wonderful to celebrate and recognize our students' positive behaviors. It was heartwarming to see our students enthusiastically go through the high five tunnel to be recognized for their achievements. Additionally, the Caught Being Good store opened to much excitement, and students eagerly shopped for items with their earned Dolphin Dragon Dollars that they receive for demonstrating positive behaviors.

Looking ahead, don’t miss our annual McTeacher's Night Fundraiser! Join us for a delicious meal while our dedicated teachers and staff happily serve you at the counter and drive-thru. A portion of all sales goes to our school. We hope to see you there!

Every year, we send our sixth grade students to Pali Institute Science Camp for an amazing experiential science education. To offset the cost, we run several fundraisers during the school year. Earlier this month, we kicked off our "Ring in the Holidays" fundraiser, with proceeds supporting this year's sixth grade science camp trip. The fundraiser will end this Wednesday, September 25. In addition, our fifth grade class has begun "Friday Treat Sales" to raise funds for their sixth grade science camp trip. Let's support our students! Please see more details below in the flyers.

As a reminder, please say goodbye to your child at the front of school. All parents and caregivers need to check in through the office before coming on campus and display a visitor or volunteer badge. Thank you for helping us with this safety protocol. Our before school guidelines are below.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at Sumner Danbury

Sumner Danbury holds assemblies at the beginning of the school year to go over the school and playground rules. At the assembly, the school rules are reviewed for new and returning students and they get a chance to learn more about the positive behavior incentives program.

Our discipline plan is based on teaching and acknowledging positive behavior expectations. These expectations are based on our school motto: Be Kind, Be Responsible, Be the Best You Can Be!

Attendance Counts

Sumner Programs Attendance Wk 3

Prompt and regular attendance is a key component to your child’s success in school. Students need to attend school to achieve in school. When students are not in school, they fall behind. Chronic absenteeism impacts all students—no matter their age. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate.

When excessive absences (excused and unexcused) or tardies occur, the school district’s automated system notifies parents with a letter expressing concern. The school site makes every effort to work with families to solve attendance problems. However, if poor attendance continues, the matter may be referred to the School Attendance and Review Board of Los Angeles County (SARB).

Parents can help promote good attendance by scheduling home activities, appointments, trips, and family vacations outside of regular school days and times.

When your child is absent

As soon as you know your child will be absent from school, please call the office to speak to the office directly or call the Attendance Hotline. You can call this number any time; it is available 24 hours.

Attendance Hotline: (909) 399-1749

If you do not call, please expect a call from the office that day. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming job, so your help in calling the office is greatly appreciated.

Contracts - Independent Study

If it becomes necessary for your child to be absent from school for multiple days in a row, please let your child’s teacher know at least three days in advance, if possible. Classroom work will be sent with your child and he/she is expected to complete this work during the contract dates. When the work is completed, it must be returned to the school immediately. The funding credit collected from the state is based on the percentage of the work completed by the student.

English Language Learner Corner

EL Corner

Welcome to the English Language Learner Corner! Here you will find resources for supporting students who are learning English as a second language at home. Enjoy!

This resource focuses on the The Cognitive Benefits of Being Bilingual

According to the National Library of Medicine, more of the world’s population is bilingual or multilingual than monolingual. In addition to facilitating cross-cultural communication, this trend also positively affects cognitive abilities. Researchers have shown that the bilingual brain can have better attention and task-switching capacities than the monolingual brain, thanks to its developed ability to inhibit one language while using another. In addition, bilingualism has positive effects at both ends of the age spectrum: Bilingual children as young as seven months can better adjust to environmental changes, while bilingual seniors can experience less cognitive decline.

The Autism Corner

Autism

Welcome to the Autism Corner! Here you will find resources for supporting students with Autism at home. This resource will focus on reinforcements.

Understanding Reinforcement for Students with Autism

Reinforcement is a key tool used to support the learning and development of children with autism. Simply put, reinforcement involves rewarding desired behaviors to encourage them to happen more often. For example, if a student completes a task or communicates effectively, they might receive praise, a favorite toy, or extra playtime as a reward.

The benefits of reinforcement are significant. It helps children with autism learn new skills, improves communication, and promotes positive behavior. By focusing on their strengths and celebrating small wins, we create an environment where students feel motivated, confident, and ready to engage more fully in their learning experiences.

Feel free to ask your child’s teacher for ways to use reinforcement strategies at home!

Click HERE for the companion guide for families focusing on reinforcements.

We hope you found this resource helpful.
