Happy October!

We’d like to thank you for a wonderful week of Fall Conferences. Your efforts to arrange timely pickups and meet with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress are greatly appreciated. By working together, we are helping to pave the way for your child’s academic success.

October is packed with exciting events at our school, and we need your support to make them happen! Please consider volunteering for our upcoming Book Fair and Harvest Festival. Every helping hand makes a difference. For more details, see the flyers below. Thank you for your support!

This week we continue with our Fall Conferences—an important opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress and set goals for the year. To accommodate these meetings, students will have early dismissal from Tuesday, October 1, through Tuesday, October 8. Kindergarten through 6th grade will be dismissed at 1:00 PM each day. Please be sure to make any necessary child care arrangements.

Students in Ms. Garcilazo's first grade class work on their writing.

Students in Ms. McCrary and Mr. Rodrick's class had fun learning about the Neptune Festival Boardwalk while creating sand slime during an engaging science lesson.

Students in Ms. Calles's class are focused and engaged during their math center rotations.

Students in Ms. Huizar's class enjoy reading the story "Chasing Dragons" and completing a fun worksheet about their own personalized dragon.

Morning Meeting Assembly - the 25th Day of School!

This past Wednesday, we celebrated the 25th Day of School during our PBIS morning assembly, highlighting the importance of daily attendance. Thank you for planning vacations and appointments outside of school hours. Having positive conversations with your child about attendance helps ensure they have every opportunity to attend school and succeed academically.

Presentation of our School Plan to the Board of Education October 3

On Thursday, October 5th, we had the privilege of presenting our School Plan for Student Achievement to the Board of Education, celebrating our successes and outlining our plan for student achievement this year. A special shout-out to our student leaders, Jerry Morrison (6th grade) and Emalee Vasquez (5th grade), for their excellent help in presenting. The board of trustees enjoyed hearing directly from our students!

School begins every day at 8:00 AM
Teachers pick up their students from their line at 8:00 AM
Students are late and will be marked tardy if they arrive after 8:00 AM

Attendance Counts

Prompt and regular attendance is a key component to your child’s success in school. Students need to attend school to achieve in school. When students are not in school, they fall behind. Chronic absenteeism impacts all students—no matter their age. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate.

When excessive absences (excused and unexcused) or tardies occur, the school district’s automated system notifies parents with a letter expressing concern. The school site makes every effort to work with families to solve attendance problems. However, if poor attendance continues, the matter may be referred to the School Attendance and Review Board of Los Angeles County (SARB).

Parents can help promote good attendance by scheduling home activities, appointments, trips, and family vacations outside of regular school days and times.

When your child is absent

As soon as you know your child will be absent from school, please call the office to speak to the office directly or call the Attendance Hotline. You can call this number any time; it is available 24 hours.

If you do not call, please expect a call from the office that day. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming job, so your help in calling the office is greatly appreciated.

Contracts - Independent Study

If it becomes necessary for your child to be absent from school for multiple days in a row, please let your child’s teacher know at least three days in advance, if possible. Classroom work will be sent with your child and he/she is expected to complete this work during the contract dates. When the work is completed, it must be returned to the school immediately. The funding credit collected from the state is based on the percentage of the work completed by the student.

Welcome to the Autism Corner! Here you will find resources for supporting students with Autism at home. This resource will focus on reinforcements.

Supporting Peer Interactions at Home:

Peer interactions, like playing, sharing, and communicating, can be challenging for some children with autism. It's important to provide support by encouraging activities with peers, such as playdates, going to playgrounds, or online interactions. For children who struggle, using reinforcement, prompting, and visual cues can help them feel more comfortable and improve their social engagement. With the right strategies, all children with autism can participate in peer interactions, even if verbal communication is challenging.

Feel free to ask your child’s teacher for ways you can promote peer interactions at home!

At Sumner Danbury we believe that parents and guardians are partners which is why we would like to invite you to join us and become a member of our School Site Council. The School Site Council (SSC) is collective group of teachers, parents, administrators, and interested community members who work together to develop and monitor a school's improvement plan.
