Greetings Sumner Danbury Families,

We’re thrilled to announce that this week is packed with exciting events at school! It's Digital Safety Week, where students will engage in lessons about staying safe and responsible with digital devices and online. Additionally, our much-anticipated Book Fair is happening, offering a fantastic opportunity to foster a love of reading. We can’t wait for your children to participate!

Our Book Fair will take place from October 14 – October 18 in our Multi-Purpose Room (MPR). As always—every purchase at the Fair benefits our school with 50% of sales going to our school library for the purchase of new books! We have eWallet, a digital payment option, available as a great alternative to cash. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.

Students may preview the Book Fair with their class on Monday or Tuesday, and then the Fair will open for sales at dismissal times and during students' recesses. Please see the flyer below for the exact times the Fair is open and for volunteer opportunities. Jana Hassin is our parent Book Fair coordinator. A special shout-out and thank you to Ms. Hassin for all her hard work setting up the Book Fair for our students, families, and staff.

Student Learning

Students in Ms. McCrary's class are learning about nocturnal animals and enjoying a fun bat-themed craft activity.

Students in Ms. Butler's class are developing their fine motor skills by tracing letters on an iPad during ELA centers.

Students in Ms. Calles's class work independently during their math centers.

During library time, Ms. Annick, our wonderful librarian, reads a story about the fall season to students and asks comprehension questions throughout.

Students in Ms. Kane's class enjoy creating a fun candy corn craft during their occupational therapy group sessions.

Ms. Burguan's TK students expand their scientific vocabulary as they study spiders. It's scary fun!

Fifth graders in Ms. Park's class examine mold in their study of the role of decomposers in an ecosystem.

ELAC Meeting

Last Wednesday, we hosted our first English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meeting. Thank you to all the parents who attended. Parents had the opportunity to hear how Sumner Danbury supports our English Language Learner students. It was a fantastic collaborative experience! A special shout out to Rosa Leong, our district's Senior Liaison for Youth and Family Services; Millie Monroy, our district Youth and Family Services Liaison; and Danita Molloy and Susan McCrary, our amazing English Learner Coordinators here at Sumner Danbury, for making this event possible.

Attendance Counts

Prompt and regular attendance is a key component to your child’s success in school. Students need to attend school to achieve in school. When students are not in school, they fall behind. Chronic absenteeism impacts all students—no matter their age. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate.

When excessive absences (excused and unexcused) or tardies occur, the school district’s automated system notifies parents with a letter expressing concern. The school site makes every effort to work with families to solve attendance problems. However, if poor attendance continues, the matter may be referred to the School Attendance and Review Board of Los Angeles County (SARB).

Parents can help promote good attendance by scheduling home activities, appointments, trips, and family vacations outside of regular school days and times.

When your child is absent

As soon as you know your child will be absent from school, please call the office to speak to the office directly or call the Attendance Hotline. You can call this number any time; it is available 24 hours.

If you do not call, please expect a call from the office that day. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming job, so your help in calling the office is greatly appreciated.

Contracts - Independent Study

If it becomes necessary for your child to be absent from school for multiple days in a row, please let your child’s teacher know at least three days in advance, if possible. Classroom work will be sent with your child and he/she is expected to complete this work during the contract dates. When the work is completed, it must be returned to the school immediately. The funding credit collected from the state is based on the percentage of the work completed by the student.

Welcome to the Autism Corner! Here you will find resources for supporting students with Autism at home. This resource will focus on reinforcements.

Supporting Peer Interactions at Home:

Peer interactions, like playing, sharing, and communicating, can be challenging for some children with autism. It's important to provide support by encouraging activities with peers, such as playdates, going to playgrounds, or online interactions. For children who struggle, using reinforcement, prompting, and visual cues can help them feel more comfortable and improve their social engagement. With the right strategies, all children with autism can participate in peer interactions, even if verbal communication is challenging.

The School Site Council (SSC) is collective group of teachers, parents, administrators, and interested community members who work together to develop and monitor a school's improvement plan.
