To Parents/Guardians:             

Your child is attending a school receiving Title I federal funds through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). At the beginning of each school year, local educational agencies receiving Title I funds are required to notify parents whose student(s) attend a Title I school that they may request, and the agency will provide the parents on request (and in a timely manner), information regarding the professional qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers, including at a minimum:

1. Whether the student’s teacher:

   • Has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;

   •  Is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived; and

   •  Is teaching in the field of discipline of the certification of the teacher.

2. Whether the child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.

Currently, all CUSD teachers at schools receiving Title I federal funds have met state qualification and licensing criteria and are teaching in the field of discipline of certification.

At each staff meeting, we celebrate our colleagues who embody our district's core values: Excellence, Equity, Innovation, and Integrity. Congratulations to Mrs. Hansen, Mr. Guzman, Mrs. Ballesteros, and Ms. Calles for their outstanding contributions to our Sumner Danbury Community!

Over the past few weeks, our school staff has been sharing what they're grateful for by filling out leaves to create this beautiful Gratitude Tree. November is the perfect time to reflect and express our appreciation to others!

Before School 7:40 AM - 7:55 AM

• Students are to arrive between 7:40 AM - 7:55 AM

• Optional breakfast is available for free in our MPR cafeteria 7:40 AM - 7:55 AM

• The playground is also open for play during this time (NEW)

• The line up bell rings at 7:55 AM

• School begins every day at 8:00 AM

• Teachers pick up their students from their line at 8:00 AM

• Students are late and will be marked tardy if they arrive after 8:00 AM

Prompt and regular attendance is a key component to your child’s success in school. Students need to attend school to achieve in school. When students are not in school, they fall behind. Chronic absenteeism impacts all students—no matter their age. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate.

When excessive absences (excused and unexcused) or tardies occur, the school district’s automated system notifies parents with a letter expressing concern. The school site makes every effort to work with families to solve attendance problems. However, if poor attendance continues, the matter may be referred to the School Attendance and Review Board of Los Angeles County (SARB).

Parents can help promote good attendance by scheduling home activities, appointments, trips, and family vacations outside of regular school days and times.

When your child is absent

As soon as you know your child will be absent from school, please call the office to speak to the office directly or call the Attendance Hotline. You can call this number any time; it is available 24 hours.

If you do not call, please expect a call from the office that day. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming job, so your help in calling the office is greatly appreciated.

Contracts - Independent Study

If it becomes necessary for your child to be absent from school for multiple days in a row, please let your child’s teacher know at least three days in advance, if possible. Classroom work will be sent with your child and he/she is expected to complete this work during the contract dates. When the work is completed, it must be returned to the school immediately. The funding credit collected from the state is based on the percentage of the work completed by the student.

You can help your child build vocabulary and background knowledge—both essential for reading—by engaging in conversations every day. Talking with your child about the world around them, telling stories, and describing experiences helps create a language-rich environment and a strong foundation for reading.

 Tips by Age:

- For Babies: Narrate your actions, and as they start speaking, ask questions like "What's that?" to encourage them to listen and connect words to concepts.

- For Young Children: Discuss what you see in the neighborhood or on TV. While reading, ask questions about the story, use new words, and share personal stories to build their understanding of the world and their identity.

Remember, any language you speak at home contributes to their reading development!
