Greetings Sumner Danbury Families,

This week we had our Wednesday Morning Meeting, where we celebrated students who have demonstrated kindness. We added a little Disney magic to the event to make it extra special for our students. Students and staff participated in Mickey’s Cookie Face Off Challenge minute-to-win-it game with enthusiasm. Seeing our students' excitement was truly priceless.

This coming week, we hope you join us on Thursday evening for a delightful dinner at Casa Maguey in Claremont. Sumner Danbury staff members will be helping out serving chips and salsa, and a portion of the proceeds will come back to our school. A big shout-out to the Santana family for hosting this event at their restaurant. Thank you! Let's support local business and our school!

Lastly, please note that there is no school on Monday in observance of Veterans Day. We honor our veterans and are deeply grateful for their service!

Sumner Danbury Cross-Country Invitational

Sumner Danbury Cross-Country Invitational 2024 Details

Hosted by Sumner Danbury Elementary School

When: Friday, December 13, 2024

Where: Sumner Danbury Elementary, 1770 Sumner Ave Claremont, CA 91711

Race Times:

Grades 1-3 1K Race at 9:00 AM
Grades 4-6 2K Race at 10:00 AM

Entries: Each class will compose a team of 5 or more runners!

Entry Fee: FREE - This is a community building event, and parents and caregivers are encouraged to attend and cheer on the runners! Spectators are welcome along the course and near the start/finish line in the designated areas.

Parking Fee: FREE

Course: The course will be well-marked across the school campus and neighboring Griffith Park. There will be volunteers from Claremont High School, Chaffey College, and University of LaVerne to help direct students. Course Maps will be made available.

Awards: Finisher awards will be given to every runner who finishes the race!

Finish Chute: Make sure your athletes are aware that they must stay in the finish chute and exit at the end of the chute. Please follow directions of any race official in the finishing chute and do not leave until told to do so.

If your child would like to compete, please return the permission slip by November 15. All runners must have a permission slip turned in because the course includes the park next to our school.

Running Club

Dear Parents of 4th-6th Grade Students,

Our school will host a 1K/2K Cross-Country Invitational on December 13 at Sumner Danbury Elementary School/Griffith Park. To help students prepare and learn more about running, Coach Kristin Crowell is leading the Sumner Danbury Running Club. While participation in the club is not required, it is designed for runners planning to compete in the December 13 race. The Running Club will hold practices during lunch recess on the dates listed below, as well as on Wednesdays after school.

Student Learning

Students are to arrive between 7:40 AM - 7:55 AM
Optional breakfast is available for free in our MPR cafeteria 7:40 AM - 7:55 AM
The playground is also open for play during this time (NEW)

School begins every day at 8:00 AM
Teachers pick up their students from their line at 8:00 AM
Students are late and will be marked tardy if they arrive after 8:00 AM

Attendance Counts

Prompt and regular attendance is a key component to your child’s success in school. Students need to attend school to achieve in school. When students are not in school, they fall behind. Chronic absenteeism impacts all students—no matter their age. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate.

When excessive absences (excused and unexcused) or tardies occur, the school district’s automated system notifies parents with a letter expressing concern. The school site makes every effort to work with families to solve attendance problems. However, if poor attendance continues, the matter may be referred to the School Attendance and Review Board of Los Angeles County (SARB).

Parents can help promote good attendance by scheduling home activities, appointments, trips, and family vacations outside of regular school days and times.

When your child is absent

As soon as you know your child will be absent from school, please call the office to speak to the office directly or call the Attendance Hotline. You can call this number any time; it is available 24 hours.

If you do not call, please expect a call from the office that day. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming job, so your help in calling the office is greatly appreciated.

Contracts - Independent Study

If it becomes necessary for your child to be absent from school for multiple days in a row, please let your child’s teacher know at least three days in advance, if possible. Classroom work will be sent with your child and he/she is expected to complete this work during the contract dates. When the work is completed, it must be returned to the school immediately. The funding credit collected from the state is based on the percentage of the work completed by the student.

English Language Learner Corner

Welcome to the English Language Learner Corner! Here you will find resources for supporting students who are learning English as a second language. Enjoy!

You can help your child build vocabulary and background knowledge—both essential for reading—by engaging in conversations every day. Talking with your child about the world around them, telling stories, and describing experiences helps create a language-rich environment and a strong foundation for reading.

Tips by Age:

- For Babies: Narrate your actions, and as they start speaking, ask questions like "What's that?" to encourage them to listen and connect words to concepts.

- For Young Children: Discuss what you see in the neighborhood or on TV. While reading, ask questions about the story, use new words, and share personal stories to build their understanding of the world and their identity.

Remember, any language you speak at home contributes to their reading development!
