Dear Families,

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful Winter Break relaxing and enjoying everything that the holiday season had to offer. With your partnership, 2026 promises to be an incredible year, full of opportunities and achievements. We’re excited to welcome students back to school on Monday, January 5. To ensure a smooth transition, please make sure your child arrives on time to help them settle back into their routine. Please take a moment to read the newsletter below that was sent on Dec 21 with a few added updates.

Dear Families,

What a fantastic final week before winter break we had at school! We started the week with a fun Spirit Week, and it was such a joy to see students and staff embracing the festivities.

During our morning meeting assembly, we celebrated students who have gone above and beyond demonstrating being kind, being responsible and being the best they can be, which are such a fitting character traits to highlight during the holiday season. The week ended on a high note with our All School Sing, where our talented students showcased their musical skills in front of their peers and families. This annual event is rooted in tradition and community and it was the perfect way to close out the year!

As we head into the winter break, we want to thank you for your partnership and support throughout this year. We deeply value all that you do to make our school such a wonderful place for learning and growth.

We wish you and your family a joyful and relaxing winter break filled with many special moments. We can’t wait to see you all again in 2026 and look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the new year.

Flu Season Information and School Attendance Guidelines

As we move through the fall months, the health of our students and staff is a top priority, especially with flu season already underway. With this in mind, we want to provide guidance for families on when it may be best to send your child to school and when to keep them home.

The California Department of Public Health provides detailed guidance on symptoms to watch for, when children should remain home, and when they may return to school. We have made these resources available on the Claremont Unified School District website for your convenience.

Flu vaccinations remain widely available at local pharmacies, healthcare providers, and community clinics. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also offers seasonal flu vaccination clinics, and information about these clinics is available on its website.

To access the CDPH guidelines, please visit this link or see the chart below

Attendance Counts

Prompt and regular attendance is a key component to your child’s success in school. Students need to attend school to achieve in school. When students are not in school, they fall behind. Chronic absenteeism impacts all students—no matter their age. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate.

When excessive absences (excused and unexcused) or tardies occur, the school district’s automated system notifies parents with a letter expressing concern. The school site makes every effort to work with families to solve attendance problems. However, if poor attendance continues, the matter may be referred to the School Attendance and Review Board of Los Angeles County (SARB).

Parents can help promote good attendance by scheduling home activities, appointments, trips, and family vacations outside of regular school days and times.

When your child is absent

As soon as you know your child will be absent from school, please call the office to speak to the office directly, call the Attendance Hotline or complete the digital absence form. You can call the attendance hotline number or complete the digital absence form any time; they are available 24 hours.

Attendance Hotine: (909) 399-1749

If you do not call, please expect a call and/or message from the office that day. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming job, so your help in calling the office is greatly appreciated.

Contracts - Independent Study

If it becomes necessary for your child to be absent from school for one or more days in a row, please let your child’s teacher know at least three days in advance, if possible. Classroom work will be sent with your child and he/she is expected to complete this work during the contract dates. When the work is completed, it must be returned to the school immediately. The funding credit collected from the state is based on the percentage of the work completed by the student.

The Autism Corner

Welcome to the Autism Corner! Here you will find resources for supporting students with Autism at home. This resource will focus on how to make the return from winter break smoother for your child.

The return to school following winter break can be challenging for students with autism and their families. The key to success is to gradually reintroduce routines, use visual aids like schedules, openly communicate about the transition, and ensure the child has access to sensory tools to manage potential anxiety and sensory overload; this includes discussing expectations with the school and teachers to ensure a smooth re-entry

Here are some tips to help prepare students to return to school:

Key Strategies:

Visual Schedules and Social Stories:

Create a visual timetable of the school day and use social stories to explain the routine and potential challenges they might face, helping them anticipate what's coming.

Start Early with Transition Talk:

Begin discussing the return to school a few days before the break ends, focusing on positive aspects like seeing friends and familiar activities.

Sensory Preparation:

If your child has sensory sensitivities, provide calming sensory items like weighted blankets, fidget toys, or noise-canceling headphones to help manage sensory overload.

Practice Routines:

Re-establish the morning routine including getting dressed, eating breakfast, and getting on the bus a few days before school starts.

Communicate with the School:

Keep open communication with the teacher, discussing any concerns about the transition and ensuring they are aware of your child's needs and support strategies.

Gradual Exposure:

If possible, arrange a visit to the school before the first day to familiarize your child with the environment.

Positive Reinforcement:

Provide praise and rewards for successfully navigating transitions and adapting to the new routine.

Be Patient and Flexible:

Understand that the first few days back might be challenging, so be patient and adjust your expectations accordingly.

We hope you find this resource helpful.

New resource coming Feb. 2025.
